Episode 1- "A Journey from Pupil to Peer "
What happens when a seasoned teacher meets a former student, now a fellow educator? Discover the heartwarming journey of Mr. Ken Newton and Miss Juliette Gunn as they reunite to co-host a podcast filled with nostalgia, wisdom, and a shared love for teaching. With 28 years under his belt, Mr. Newton fondly recalls the days when he taught a young Juliette, who is now inspiring students of her own. Their story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the unbreakable bond it can create.
Join us for a lively discussion about the multifaceted world of teaching, where educators wear countless hats—teachers, counselors, and parental figures, all rolled into one. Mr. Newton shares insights on how education has evolved over the years, while Miss Gunn gives us a peek into her experience teaching mild/moderate special education across multiple grades. Together, they paint a vivid picture of the highs and lows of the profession, setting the stage for future episodes that promise to explore the rewarding, albeit chaotic, life of educators.
Hello everybody. This is Mr Ken Newton and I'm with Miss Juliette Gunn. I am so excited to revamp the existing podcast that I had, and now I revamped it and I'm so excited that we're going to do a podcast together with Miss Juliette Gunn. You want to say hi, Juliette, Hi guys, it's Miss Juliette, I love it and it is class act. We like to think we're a little special as teachers Lord knows what we do as a living, but we're so excited to have this podcast, the first segment. We want to introduce ourselves and we have a pretty cool story, kind of a backstory, that I think you'll get a kick out of. So, again, my name is Mr Ken Newton. I've taught for 28 years, taught various grades, everything except fourth grade, Go figure, Feels like I've taught them all. And this year I'm teaching fifth grade and again, like I said, my 28th year of teaching Crazy to believe. And I have Miss Juliette here and she's going to introduce herself. And then we have the backstory of how we know each other and how we've grown up together.
Speaker 2:Hey guys, it's Miss Juliette Gunn here, not as experienced as Mr Newton here, but it is my third year of teaching. I have been teaching fourth, fifth and sixth grade, so kind of in the upper grade range, but so far so good. I mean we'll get into that a little bit more though I love it.
Speaker 1:Hey, and guess what friends? Did you know what our backstory is? Our backstory is a thousand years ago. When Mr Newton was teaching sixth grade, miss Juliet was my student. Yes, oh my gosh, but I'm cheap and it makes me feel old, it makes me feel like I other hand, in all seriousness, just be thrilled and happy and just beyond ecstatic how Juliet has grown into be just an amazing, amazing teacher. I cannot do what she does, she's just an amazing teacher. So that's a little bit about us, a little bit about who we are and we're excited to share about our crazy job. Yes, friends, we love what we do, but yes, it's a little about who we are and we're excited to share about our crazy job. Yes, friends, we love what we do, but yes, it's a little crazy. And after the next segment we'll kind of get into what we're going to talk about in this podcast and what you have to look forward to, so thanks for listening and we'll catch you on the next segment.
Speaker 1:All right, friends. Hey, we are back. Mr Newton here and Juliet and I want to tell you a little bit about what we do every day. Yes, I teach fifth grade, but yes, I'm a teacher, and I think Juliet would agree. We are teacher, counselor, father, uncle, everything under that plate. Obviously, juliet wouldn't be the father, she'd be the mother and the aunt, et cetera, et cetera. But I'll let her share that. But, needless to say, we love what we do, friends. But education has changed. Education has changed.
Speaker 1:My joke is when Juliet was in my class I don't remember friends, the first segment, she was in my class a hundred years ago. But those were the good old days, juliet. Ah, they were a little social Friends. It's changed a lot. Education has changed a lot and we wear many, many, many, many let me keep going many, many hats. So we teach. I teach fifth grade and I'm going to let Juliet share what she does on every day. And did I say in the first segment, she's pretty amazing and I want her to share about what she does on a daily basis so I, like you said, I wear so many hats.
Speaker 2:I think I'm a parent, I'm. I think I'm a parent, I'm a mother, I'm a school nurse, I am a teacher. This year I teach actually mild mod fourth, fifth and sixth grade. Yes, that's three grade levels in one classroom and I just special education. I mean, I don't know where to even begin with that, it's just an array of different students and abilities and things like that. But so far, yeah.
Speaker 1:Hey friends, did you know that? I did. I tell you that Juliet wears like her superhero costume underneath her clothes, because she again performs miracles every day. She's amazing. Hey, I have a crazy question, juliet is if you weren't teaching, what would you do? I'll tell you what I would do. If you weren't teaching, what would be your career? That is an easy one, and I know you do. I'll tell you what I would do If you weren't teaching. What would be your career?
Speaker 2:That is an easy one. Oh really, I would actually be in the FBI right now.
Speaker 1:Awesome. She'd be a super cool FBI agent. I love it. I love it. I love it. She's a much. She'd be a much better FBI agent than those people on TV. I'm just kidding. I know they're fake, but we both have had the honor of meeting real FBI agents and asking them questions, and I agree, Juliet would be the perfect FBI agent. So, hey, we gave you a little taste of what we do every day. The 47 things yes, I'm just kidding Like 46, actually Things that we do every day. The 47 things yes, I'm just kidding like 46 actually things that we do every single day. Yes, we teach, but we do a little more.
Speaker 1:In the last segment, we want to kind of tease you on what we're going to talk about in this awesome podcast. Tell your friends, we're going to give you the whole truth and nothing but the truth. There's your legalese on what happens in education, not only elementary, junior, high and high school. We're going to tell you what kids are talking about. We're going to tell you what we see every day and we see a lot, friends. We think we've seen it all, but it's like daily. Hey, I've never seen that before. We're going to tell you. So we're super excited to be here, and the last segment will give you a little preview on what we're going to tell you.
Speaker 2:So we're super excited to be here and the last segment, we'll give you a little preview on what we're going to talk about.

We want to kind of give you a little tease of what we're going to talk about in the future. We're going to talk about the education system. Oh, where do we begin About the education system? We're going to talk about apps that your kids are on, that you don't know about, and oh, where do we begin? We want to give you some tips and suggestions. We want you to laugh, we want you to cry with us. Yes, we cry on occasion. Yes, practically every day. Good point, miss Juliet. But we want to give you a little taste of what's going to happen in the future. And, again, we are so excited to share what we encounter every single day on our job, because there's a lot of misnomers. Yes, friends, teachers work in the summertime. Yes, we get our summers off, but boy, we work. I don't know. What do you think, miss Julia? Where do we begin?
Speaker 2:We're going to talk about what happens in this classroom, what the education system is looking like, what they're demanding of us and what's going on with the children. But yeah, every day we are working.
